Stop Dog Barking / Bark Control
Is your barking dog driving you crazy? Then it is time to stop dog barking, before you end up with serious conflicts with your neighbors, or answering to a local animal control officer, or even going to court.
Why Dogs Bark:
Dogs bark for a variety of reasons, if they are bore, lonely, hungry, its potty time, or see other animals, all of which they consider perfectly legitimate. Barking is how dogs communicate with humans. Sometimes barking can be useful, for instance when the dog is warning against a stranger in the house. You would not want your dog to stay quite and not tell you that someone is breaking in, would you? Other times when a dog barks at the slightest provocation or for no reason it can make you feel like throwing him out the house.
Before starting any “stop dog barking” training, visit the vet to ensure his barking behavior is not related to a medical condition. If he doesn’t get a clean bill of health, make sure to take into account his condition when selecting a training product.

How to Stop Dog from Barking
Luckily, with the proper training you can learn to stop a barking dog or limit dog barking sounds. The following simple ideas will get you started with your goal:
- How to stop dog barking when the doorbell rings, someone knocks the door or the phone rings. When your dog starts barking throw an object (ex. Magazine) in his direction and tell him to stop. Immediately, after the dog stops barking give him a dog treat and praise him. If the dog barks again, just repeat the steps again.
- Another alternative: instead of throwing an object in his direction you can click and provide a dog treat. Here is how it works. When your dog starts barking call him by his name. Once he turns and makes eye contact with you, click and give him a dog treat. After being quiet for few seconds say “quiet dog”, click again and give him the dog treat. He will soon begin to associate the words “quiet dog” with the state of being quiet. See the Dog Clicker Training article for more ideas.
- At times, you don’t want to stop dog barking because they use their voice to deter people from entering your home. So always make sure to see what your dog is barking about before telling him to stop barking. Since barking may be useful at times, you might want to teach the dog how to bark for specific number of times, instead of not letting him bark at all. Start by letting your dog bark three times (you determine the # of times) and on the third bark say “that is enough” or whatever keyword you want to use. When the dog stops barking give him a dog treat and praise him. If he did not stop barking, then throw an object in his direction and it should get his attention and cause him to stop a barking.
- Dogs are pack animals and enjoy being with their families. Dogs need lots of attention, lots of interaction, and lots of communication. If your dog is alone for many hours in a day he might be protesting. If your dog starts barking next time you leave your home or apartment try the throwing technique. Take a magazine or any soft object and close the door behind you. When he starts barking, open the door, throw the magazine in his direction, tell him “quiet dog” or “stop dog barking”, and leave the apartment. If dog barks again, just repeat the entire process again.
- If you are unable to stop dog barking and you live in an apartment consider confining him. Use a wire dog crate and keep the dog in the kitchen or any other room he is familiar with, so he won’t feel isolated. Put a dog blanket in the crate’s floor to make him feel secure and comfortable. Don’t forget to leave the dog’s favorite toy or bone so he can play with them, and keep him from getting bore.
- Your dog might be barking because he is not getting enough exercise. Your dog might not be getting all the exercise it needs, if the barking is coupled with an agitated demeanor such a fidgeting, restlessness, destructive or aggressive behavior. Exercising few minutes in the morning will make a difference. If this is not an option, perhaps you can hire someone to walk your dog.
- When possible take your puppy everywhere you go (park, outdoor cafes, high traffic area) so he can develop into a well balance dog. If he is socialized he will be less incline to bark out of fear or bark at other dogs. You want him to become a social butterfly so he will be friendlier and more easily adjusted to anyone entering your home. This will help him not to become the barking dog of the block.

Stop Dog from Barking |Need Help to Train a Dog to Stop biting & barking?
Dear Dog Owers:
I’m 13 years old and this is my first dog.. like ever. I’ve always had hamsters or bunny’s or fish in the past.. anything that DOESN’T make noise pretty much. I had been begging my mom for the longest time to buy me a puppy because i was always lonely in the house with nothing to do.I told my mom I’d love em and take care of em with all my heart and do anything. I thought it was a piece of cake. All you have to do is feed them and play with them right? WRONG.
I got my first puppy Shihtzu and named him Dash. Right about now he is 10 1/2 weeks old. Most dogs of these kinds rarely bark, but i got a bark all right.
He is the cutest thing ever but the problem is he barks too much! He wasn’t like this the first week or so. Now it is just non stop. I can’t go to sleep, leave him alone, or just have a nice quiet evening. He only barks when I’m not playing with him or not petting him or when he is lonely. I try my best to be around him, but i just have other things to do and places to be. It’s driving me insane and sometimes i yell at him or tap him on the head. But that just makes it worse. I don’t know what to do! HELP!
My other problem is biting. I know he is a puppy, and they teeth, but my family spoils him sooo much with toys he still bites my hand and feet and growls and barks if he doesn’t get to bite on me. And he has SHARP baby teeth. My family spoils him with toys A LOT but he likes to bite people instead.
Like sometimes when i wanna just pet him because he is being a good boy, that is literally impossible. He always tilts his head towards my hand and trys to bite at me. I know puppy’s are suppose to do this, but i don’t want him to get that habit of it and think that it is OK for him to bite people.
I don’t want to hurt him and hit him for being bad because that just makes it worse and more aggressive. He is still a baby. But a huge turd.
Please, I’m begging you. Tell me how your trained your dog how to stop barking and biting. Your techniques, your consequences you gave your dog, your rewards you gave your dog, EVERYTHING. Please this is way harder than i thought and I’ve only been getting 6 hours of sleep because of him! …and it’s summer ):

How to you make a dog stop barking?
I live in an apartment building, and in the building across from mine, there is always a yappy dog barking the backyard. Today it was barking for more than 3 hours straight early in the morning. I do not know anyone in the other building, but I can hear the dog clearly through my window. Are there devices that emit a high-frequency sound and makes dogs be quiet? My neighbor across the floor also has a dog who barks whenever the neighbor leaves. Hopefully this solution can deal with both.

How can I get my basset hound puppy to stop biting and barking?
Will this continue until he’s an adult if I don’t train it or will it eventually mellow down? I bought him several chew toys and small bones with meat, but he seems to get sick of chewing his toys n bones easily and starts chewing my shoe. Sometimes when i yell at him with a stern voice saying no or ignoring him he understands, but he doesn’t seem to learn to stop completely… I do have a muzzle cover or whatever and water spray but I don’t like to use it because it doesn’t seem to work… His behavior is not too bad its just he gets excited when he sees people/new people approaching and he gets hyper sometimes because he’s a pup…
