How to Stop Your Dog from Digging in the Yard and Fence

Author: Your dog dug up your favorite rosebush yet again. It seems common sense that dogs digging in the yard or around the fence is simply what they do. However, there is a point at which doggy digging becomes a doggone nuisance. It is important to focus not only on how to stop dog digging dogs but also on possible causes of this behavior.
Reason Why Dogs Dig 
Some of possible causes for your dog’s digging adventures include: instincts (and some breeds are more prone to digging behavior than others), attention seeking act, need for mental and physical stimulation, searching for a mate, enjoy the feel of freshly turned soil, the smell of fertilizer is tempting, shelter (cool off or warm up), hunting, buried treasure, and other reasons.
The first thing that you want to do is to find out if your dog’s breed is particularly prone to digging. This will be helpful in determining how successful you are likely to stop your dog from digging in your garden, around your fence, or on your lawn. Often it is impossible to completely stop digging behavior, but there are tactics for reducing the amount of digging (and damage) involved.

How to Get a Dog to Stop Digging
If your pooch is digging for attention or because he needs mental and physical stimulation; then perhaps it is time to spend a little more quality time by taking him out for a run to get rid of the extra energy.
Other possible causes need to be solved in the yard itself, so let’s examine several techniques on how to get dogs to stop digging:
At times sprinklers, hoses, and water bottles can effectively stop dogs from digging around the fence or in the garden. When you catch your dog digging in the garden, turn the sprinkler or hose on and splash him with water. If you are inconspicuous enough, the canine will firmly believe that the garden mounted the surprise water attack and will refrain from digging there again.
Fill in any gaps in fences and make sure there is no gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence. Sometimes the concept of “out of sight, out of mind” works well, especially for scent hounds. Concrete and bricks can act as effective filler underneath your fence, giving your dog material that he can’t dig through.
Building a sandbox for your dog, or an acceptable place for your dog to dig, is also a rather effective method to stop dogs digging. As long as you train your dog to understand that the sandbox is a designated area for his digging expeditions, this can be a very effective compromise. If your dog is digging to bury his treasure (bones, toys, etc.), train him to bury the “treasures” in the sandbox.
One of the more popular methods to stop dogs from ever returning to their usual digging spot is by collecting your dog’s own feces and burying it in the hole(s) that he’s have been making. How is this done?
Apparently, most dogs hate the scent of their own feces and will be so repulsed by the fact that their feces now exist in their favorite digging location that they will abandon the digging location altogether. This technique is most commonly used for repeat digging (same location) and has been rather successful in stopping dogs digging behaviors.

Ideas on How Do I Stop my Dog from Eating Poop?
I need your assistance in solving the following problems that I have with a 10 week old West Highland white terrier:
1. He eats his own and other’s poop! He even digs up dog poop outside of the apartment complex I live in! How do you stop him from doing that?
2. He has started getting aggressive when I will pull him away from the poop or take something out of his mouth that he is not supposed to be chewing on. I’m guessing this is natural, but how do you teach him No?
3. I have bought him a couple toys to play with, but he seems to be losing interest…How many toys does a dog need?
4. Last but not least – im trying to leash train him so that I can take him on more walks, how do I do that, and how often should a pup be taken on walks?

Why wont my dog stop digging?!?! PLEASE help!?
I have a four year old female american eskimo dog that just won’t stop digging and chewing. I have tried putting her poop into the holes she digs but then she just moves over to a new spot. I catch her in the act and I spray her with water but she won’t stop. I’ve tried spraying the bitter spray on things I don’t want her to chew but she still won’t stop and she has a few chew toys. I walk her and we train her (we’ve been working on this problem for over a year!) but I can’t get it under control. I’ve already had to replace my couch, clothes, towels, yard hoses, and it seems like everyday I have to go out and buy more soil to fill in the holes! I’m thinking about trying a shock collar but I don’t want to hurt her. I’m afraid I will have to give her back to the pound but I feel so guilty about it. I’ve already looked into no kill shelters in our area but they never seem to have any space, if they did she’d be gone already. Please help.

how do i stop my dogs from digging during the day when i’m at work? what products should i use to keep them from digging or wanting to dig?
we live in an area where you don’t have to worry about dog theft so don’t respond if your going to say leave them in a crate in the house. they should be able to run around and be free. thanks.
I have a problem dog!?
She’s 10 months old and when i’m gone she tears up everything (plastic bags, shoes, tin foil and pillows) I’ve tried buying her new toys and praising her when she starts to chew on them. She only takes my dad’s shoes and tear them up, no one else"s. She also has accidents in the house even though I take her to the bathroom every 30 Min’s AND leave the door open. Whenever I pay attention to my other dog who is 11 years old she pushes him away or starts to whine. PLEASE help, my dad is starting to not like her. I can’t put her in a kennel. I just need her to stop chewing things up, stop bugging my other dog, and be potty trained, oh and to stop digging in the back yard. PLEASE USEFUL ADVICE!

How do you stop dogs from digging?
I have a coonhound and he has a shephard mix friend, right next door. They have started digging on both sides of the fence, to get to each other, and many other places in the yard. How can we get them to stop? We have tried cayenne pepper with no luck.

How do you make dogs stop digging!?
My five month old puppies are tearing up my small back yard! I take them to the dog park in the morining and a walk in the afternoon so they don’t get so bored but I don’t know what else I can do!
I do exercise them – the dog park for 30-45 minutes (they run around and around and I take them home when they get tired) and I walk them for 45 minutes in the afternoon. Again, we walk until they get tired. They get plenty of attention besides that. They are mostly in the house and have plenty of toys.
