2 separate questions re: dog training (crate training and obedience)?

I have a nearly 1 1/2 y.o. male shih tzu who I have been crate training for about 8 months. I admit I haven’t been the most consistent with that, solely due to weather (rarely if it’s raining/snowing outside I put the wee wee pads down) but for the most part, I keep to a schedule with him and reward him with play/treats. He was trained on wee wee pads first so he knows to go on them if they’re down. We just moved and he’s had two accidents, he didn’t go to the wee wee pad that was down (it was pouring outside) and the other day he pooped inside just after having come back in from outside. My first question is, how long does the crate training take to work? I know many will say I shouldn’t be doing both the crate and wee wee pads but he knows both and hasn’t had any accidents in a long time. My ultimate goal is to allow him free reign of the apartment without wee wee pads, or to know that he’ll bark when he has to go outside but how long should that take?

My second question is about his obedience when he sees people and other dogs. He barks uncontrollably (out of excitement) but it will not stop until we walk over to the other dog. Sometimes that’s not possible in which case I try so hard to get him to stop. I firmly say ‘no bark’ while lightly tugging on his leash, or I kneel down and look him in the face and say ‘NO!" Should I bring treats outside or do something different?
Great answers and tips! I agree it’s too long for him to be on the pads but it’s also impossible for me to move them closer to the door in my new apartment. There is a staircase leading to the front door and he fell down several steps when we first moved in, so now he won’t go near them, and I carry him up/down the stairs.

Stop Your Chewing Dog

infosharenow.com ===== Stop Your Chewing Dog. Free dog training guide shows you how to stop your dog from chewing plus how to manage many other common dog issues. Chewing is natural, starting from puppies all the way to a dog. Dogs think that chewing is normal. However, it is not necessarily correct. If you notice that your dog has problems with chewing, you will need to correct the problem as soon as you notice it. There are some dogs that will chew anything that they can get their teeth on. That includes shoes, clothes and furniture. Of course, these are things that you would rather them keep away from. Its not a good feeling to have to keep buying replacements.

Can someone help me with Puppy Training?

Hello. I have a white pomeranian that is 1 year and 4 months old. We have been training him with a professional and he knows sit, lie down, stay, not to ask for food at the table ( sometimes he forgets so), not to run out the door when opened, and to stay at your side when your walking him ( trust me he was at the end of the leash all the time). I was wondering if anyone knows a special site which contains stuff such as house training, obedience, and crate training ( I take him out at night so he does his business and his crate is pee/poo free) . Tomorrow I am going to Petsmart to buy a clicker, small treats that I saw ( goes along with clicker so its like click, good boy, and treat), and a house training magazine which has a Yorkie on the front cover which has tips on training your dog step-by-step in a page. So if anyone would please give me a site i would really appreciate it.

Thanks

How do I stop my dog from constantly barking at other dogs?

I rescued a dog last March, she turned 3 in February. She was always left in the back hallway and reeked of her own feces and urine. Never was walked, didn’t even know what a treat was when I gave her one…just dropped it on the floor. She had no obedience prior to when I rescued/adopted her, was not house broken and/or potty trained.

Since then, I have worked with her effortlessly. (I also have a 7 year old Yellow Lab that has also helped me control her when out walking…wasn’t planned, but he barks at her if she jumps on someone or misbehaves…and she listens to him!!)

I have taken her to doggy beaches, parks, outdoor summer fests where there are other dogs. It seems that when there are tons of dogs/people – it’s almost like she’s overstimulated and doesn’t bark at all.

When walking her she barks like crazy at other dogs, I have realized that if I make her sit, rub her ears and tell her "It’s okay." that it changes to a whine/whimper with sporadic yelps. But it doesn’t always work – try 40% of the time.

I don’t want other dogs or their owners to be afraid, because what I’ve come to realize is that she LOVES dogs and is a major sweetheart – it’s just that when she sees one and it’s far away she will continue to bark, unless it crosses our path and I let her sniff the dog. Then everything is back to normal. But, I’m afraid that if I allow for her barking to get her way while walking, that she will think that she’s in control. I mean if she barks and barks and barks and I just do what’s easiest and take her 2 blocks to the dog that she sees, I don’t believe that’s a good resolution. As an owner, I know that’s the last thing that you want your dog to think. And the other dogs and their owners cannot help but feel threatened and I tell them she’s super friendly and for some reason barks her head off until she can run up and sniff/jump on them.

So, how do I stay in control and remain the Alpha Dog and get her to stop barking her head off. It’s more or less like she’s barking and barking until I give in for us to walk up to the dog for her to see and play with – and she’ll start barking at a dog 2-3 blocks away!

Another issue, is that I’ve trained her not to jump on me and have told my friends that when they come over they need to be stern and tell her "No" and "down" or "sit" and that until she sits and behaves that they are not allowed to praise her. It doesn’t help that all my friends own cats and are not used to this…haha. Finally, one friend did as I said to do, and he was amazed at how quickly she stopped trying to jump on him and realized that when he said "NO, Sit." in a stern voice, how she listened and then he pet her. She also sporadically jumps at walker-bys while on the leash – so I feel I NEED to keep her on a short leash. The last thing I’d want is for her to do that to an elderly person or younger child and knock them down. I just feel that her previous owners kept her in such seclusion – that she’s so overwhelmed with people, puppies, new trees to smell, etc..that she just can’t control how excited she is when she sees other people and/or animals.

My question is this…is there a way for me to train her to NOT jump on OTHER people – she won’t do it to me – but it’s like she tests everyone else to see if she can get away with it.

Just for an FYI, I walk her on a harness that apparently has metal loops that lay on her shoulders and when she tugs it’s supposed to hit pressure points to make her heal better – however, I’m not so sure that this harness was the best buy.

She has come a LONG way from when I first got her, and was 10x as hyper/crazy than she is now…

So, I guess this has 2 questions. Please help, I long for enjoyable walks… :o )

Nikki
kenna – actually I tried "it’s okay" because it seemed to relax her in thunderstorms and with fireworks going on around 4th of July…and it’s the only thing so far that has worked. I really don’t want to get a muzzle.

Have tried the pinch collars – but that doesn’t control her sporadic jumping – that’s where the harness works and the pinch collar fails…At least the harness controls more than just the neck…
darlene – hmm..this will be hard to do while walking two large dogs…. ;o)

I don’t leave my dogs outside all day…this is while we’re on a walk. That wouldn’t work.
