2 separate questions re: dog training (crate training and obedience)?

I have a nearly 1 1/2 y.o. male shih tzu who I have been crate training for about 8 months. I admit I haven’t been the most consistent with that, solely due to weather (rarely if it’s raining/snowing outside I put the wee wee pads down) but for the most part, I keep to a schedule with him and reward him with play/treats. He was trained on wee wee pads first so he knows to go on them if they’re down. We just moved and he’s had two accidents, he didn’t go to the wee wee pad that was down (it was pouring outside) and the other day he pooped inside just after having come back in from outside. My first question is, how long does the crate training take to work? I know many will say I shouldn’t be doing both the crate and wee wee pads but he knows both and hasn’t had any accidents in a long time. My ultimate goal is to allow him free reign of the apartment without wee wee pads, or to know that he’ll bark when he has to go outside but how long should that take?

My second question is about his obedience when he sees people and other dogs. He barks uncontrollably (out of excitement) but it will not stop until we walk over to the other dog. Sometimes that’s not possible in which case I try so hard to get him to stop. I firmly say ‘no bark’ while lightly tugging on his leash, or I kneel down and look him in the face and say ‘NO!" Should I bring treats outside or do something different?
Great answers and tips! I agree it’s too long for him to be on the pads but it’s also impossible for me to move them closer to the door in my new apartment. There is a staircase leading to the front door and he fell down several steps when we first moved in, so now he won’t go near them, and I carry him up/down the stairs.

Stop Your Chewing Dog

infosharenow.com ===== Stop Your Chewing Dog. Free dog training guide shows you how to stop your dog from chewing plus how to manage many other common dog issues. Chewing is natural, starting from puppies all the way to a dog. Dogs think that chewing is normal. However, it is not necessarily correct. If you notice that your dog has problems with chewing, you will need to correct the problem as soon as you notice it. There are some dogs that will chew anything that they can get their teeth on. That includes shoes, clothes and furniture. Of course, these are things that you would rather them keep away from. Its not a good feeling to have to keep buying replacements.

my dog eats/bites/chews anything he can get his paws on?

My 10 week old shih tzu loves biting…. i don’t mind him biting my fingers, but an animal planet book i bought on shih tzu care and training tells me that i should stop him from that too. that aside…

Inside the house, he loves biting wires and paper. since he’s housetraining and is bound to have some accidents, he starts chewing the paper napkins i use to clean up after him if i put it down to pick up more spray….or something, you get the idea. we’ve tried to make the house as puppy-friendly as possible, but he still manages to find something. we’ve been saying NO! to him and gently smacking him with a small rolled up piece of paper that’s not even enough to hurt a fly. he doesn’t do it as often now.

Although when we’re out of the house, he puts leaves, seeds, stones, grass, anything in his mouth every 2 seconds. it’s less of a walk and more of a struggle with me saying no every few seconds and reaching in his mouth to dig stuff out. how do i curb this behavior?

How do you house train a dog that's over a year old?

I love my male shih tzu so much, but he will not stop pottying in the house. My husband says it’s because I refuse to hit him. He says all successfully trained dogs are beaten, but I think that’s horrible! Any non-violent suggestions for a dog that’s not a puppy anymore?
